Is it better to use film or digital?
It generally depends on the use of the image and the size of the finished reproduction. As a rule of thumb, anything printed larger than A4 may well benefit from having film originals made. This will need to be converted to digital files to have optimum control over colour and tone.
Can slides be produced?
Mounted 35mm can be supplied via a specialist supplier. Best quality slides are produced by the digital route for the same reason as that given above - to have control over colour and tone. The improvements that can be made over 35mm film originals are astonishing, as is the fact that costs for both processes are very similar.
What's the difference between shooting at Clockwork Studios or on location?
If you have even a moderate sized space it can be possible to shoot at your studio. The costs are the same so it depends whether you can pack up your artwork to transport it.
How long will the photography take?
For flat artwork, assume that after an initial 20 minute set up, approximately five images can be copied per hour. It is important that the artist is present while colours, tones and contrast is adjusted, (sometimes 'improvements' to the originals can be made). This is rarely simply a case of adjusting colour balance, as for strict colour fidelity each colour must be considered separately.
How are the costs calculated?
Artists Newsletter has devised and published a system for calculating fees which is applied to the cost of your photography. Charges for producing prints and slides will be passed on at cost.
